Crabgrass is an annual grass which grows fast in hot, dry weather. The branching heads of this grass look like a crab with many legs. Crabgrass is found throughout the U.S. in lawns, road sides and other waste areas. Crabgrass is naturalized here after being introduced from Europe. Strawberry growers use crabgrass as a natural mulch to substitute for straw. The grass protects the plants during the winter and when berries set in the spring, the layer of dead grass keeps berries out of the dirt.
